Parent Weekend!

Our up and coming Parent weekend will be held on January 20-22, 2012. Parent Weekend will start off as tradition with a day of activities. On Friday morning we will meet at the Palomar for Orientation & Ground Rules. Following ground rules we will discuss the theme of our January Parent Weekend which is “Family Communication”. Our first activity will start at the roller rink and then move over to try your bowling skills. Two fun family activities that you may not have done as a family for a while. Lunch will be held at 12:00pm at the roller skating rink. Following our activities parents will have approximately an hour to spend catching up. Friday's activities will wrap up at 4:00pm. All boys should be participating in these activities unless they have not been responsible enough to do so. If this is the case then you may stay and participate or you may travel to the WRA facility to spend time with your child and a WRA staff member (Please discuss details with your Parent Liaison) The activities are an excellent opportunity for you to spend time with your child and get to know other students and their families.

Saturday is a day of learning, training, understanding and application. Our Theme for this training is “FAMILY COMMUNICATION”. We have several excellent speakers lined up to share their experience as to how they have developed better methods of communication. We will refresh our ground rules over a continental breakfast starting at 9:00am and then will begin training at 10:00am, lunch will be served at 1:00pm and our Saturday trainings will finish up at 4:00pm.

Sunday Sunday is a day of rest and relaxation. Sunday morning at 9:00am we will start with breakfast for everyone at the WRA Facility then the day is left open for parents and students to spend time together. This is also a day in which you may spend one on one time discussing questions or concerns with the WRA staff.

Our registration deadline is January 13, 2012; Please click here to register. In order to register we will need the following: a firm number of family attending, what days these family members will be attending, the ages of those attending, and of course…payment. Also, don’t forget to book a hotel room so as to not be left out in the cold. Please book soon!!

Please do not mention any of this to your child here at the program. In order to have a fun, safe, and focused weekend we need to keep the students focused on what's important. So, again, DO NOT discuss the activities of parent weekend with them. We really look forward to seeing you all in January and hope that you can attend, as this is one of the ways we all work towards helping your family.

Ground Rules for WRA Parent Weekend

We will be discussing these ground rules first thing on Friday. Please let us know if you have any questions.

• NO SMOKING for the duration of the parent weekend.
• NO MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCES for the duration of Parent Weekend. This starts on Friday Morning at 9:00am and ends Sunday once you have left WRA and will not be returning until next parent weekend. Mind Altering Substances would include drugs of any kind. If you are taking a prescription drug prescribed by a Doctor please discuss this with the WRA Administrator upon your arrival. Other substances would be caffeine (including pop, coffee, tea etc...), alcohol, tobacco, etc.... if you think it is a mind altering substance then you are probably right.
  Please understand that we expect no more of you than we do of ourselves and the students. Please set a positive example. YOUR SON IS WATCHING YOU.
• NO FOUL OR DERAGATORY LANGUAGE for the entire weekend. Hopefully this would be on going for you at home as well.
• NO EXTRAS other than what has been approved by your Parent Liaison no other items should be given to your child (ie McDonalds, Pizza, Snack foods, clothing items, music, phone calls on any phone), this is not a time to spoil your child. Your child NEEDS nothing more than he has. Extras only distract from what the program is teaching the child.
• All rules of the Program apply throughout the weekend to everyone. If you expect your child not to do a certain thing but then it is ok for you to do, this sends a clear message that it is ok to do, just not around my parents. SETTING AN EXAMPLE IS KEY!!!!
• OFF CAMPUS PASSES The amount of time spent with your child will solely be determined by the way in which your child has been progressing with his service plan goals. It is the intent of the program to have your child spend as much time as possible with you however too soon can create setbacks. Your Parent Liaison will notify you if an off campus pass is recommended. We ask that you do not request something other than what The Cottage is recommending.
