Learn to Love Your Troubled Teen Without Being a Controller

Below are a number of ways to build a better relationship with your teen:

  • Show your love by respecting their opinions and being a good listener.
  • Try to listen to all they have to say before you start giving them advice - sometimes you'll discover key information which will change completely the advice they need.
  • Look for the good in your teen and compliment him or her on it.
  • Really make an effort to understand your teen by watching facial expressions, making eye contact, observing actions, and asking questions.
  • One of the best ways to show love is to spend time with your teen. Some ways to have one-on-one time with your teen include golfing, hiking, horseback riding, walking in the park, going for a picnic, or other similar activites.
Above all, continue to educate yourself! Too many parents are ignorant of the principles of good parenthood. Please take time to learn how to balance all the many facets of raising your child to be an independant and responsible member of society.
